More applications for CO2Y

The recent launch of CO2Y, Green & Cool’s compact condensing unit, has been warmly welcomed by the market.

CO2Y was developed to provide businesses that have less-demanding refrigeration requirements, such as small shops and petrol stations, with an affordable and uncomplicated, but environmentally friendly, option.

It now turns out that the range of applications is wider than expected: A CO2Y unit was recently installed at the Ica Maxi supermarket in Kungsbacka, Sweden.

“We needed a cold room in another part of the store building, and it would not have made economic sense to run piping there from the existing refrigeration system,” explains the store manager, Andreas Jendestig.

A small, self-contained, supplementary unit was the ideal solution. After requirements were discussed with the team at Kylkvalitet, who carried out the installation, the decision was made to install a CO2Y unit from Green & Cool.

“Low environmental impact was our top priority. The Ica Maxi store in Kungsbacka is about to undergo major renovation, and the whole refrigeration system will be upgraded to a greener specification,” says Andreas Jendestig.

Green & Cool’s units use environmentally friendly carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, and are financially competitive at the same time. The F-gas Regulation, which is intended to phase out the most harmful greenhouse gases in Europe, has led to a surge in customer enquiries for Kylkvalitet. Many companies are now considering switching their refrigeration systems to carbon dioxide in order to comply with future requirements.

“The 2–9 kW segment, which CO2Y falls into, has enormous future potential since there has not been an economical environmentally friendly alternative until now,” says Joakim Westerberg at Kylkvalitet.

Thanks to Green & Cool’s wide range of products it is always possible to find the right solution when a company is ready to invest in modern refrigeration technology that meets high standards of environmental performance, economy, user friendliness and reliability.

Sustainable refrigeration at the right price

It’s better for the environment, simple and inexpensive, and offers the same first-class performance as Green & Cool’s other products are renowned for. Green & Cool’s compact new condensing unit is attracting plenty of attention.

Green & Cool is now working flat out to meet demand following the launch of CO2Y.

“CO2Y uses environmentally friendly carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, but it can still compete with conventional refrigeration units on price. Now there is no longer any reason not to choose a green alternative,” says Micael Antonsson, Technical Director at Green & Cool.

CO2Y attracted a great deal of attention at the ATMOsphere conference in Barcelona in April, where it was first introduced. The unit is the first in a series of models that are all designed for businesses with smaller refrigeration requirements, such as small stores and petrol stations. The first version is intended to provide refrigeration and AC, while the next one will be a freezer unit.

Net-Zero Store Wins Award

An advanced cooling system from Green & Cool played a crucial role when Walgreens built its first net-zero store – a building that produces energy equal to or greater than it consumes. The building, located in Evanston, Illinois, has now won a prestigious ASHRAE Technology Award.

Walgreens net-zero store was built in 2013. Among its innovative features are solar panels, wind turbines, a geothermal system, energy-efficient building materials and LED lighting, as well as an ultra-efficient cooling unit.

The heat pump and refrigeration designs are based around a triple-temperature range CO2 Sirocco system made by the Swedish company Green & Cool.

By combining heat pumps and air conditioning with commercial refrigeration, Walgreens saves 60 percent energy in the Evanston store compared to traditional technology.

“It’s fantastic that Walgreens’ efforts to use environmentally-friendly technologies are recognized in this way. At Green & Cool, we are obviously also honored and proud to have contributed to the cooling and heating system. With this project, we have shown that CO2 technology has a broader field of application than just retail refrigeration,” says Micael Antonsson, Green & Cool Technical & Business Director.

With its 8,000 stores, Walgreens is the largest drugstore chain in the United States. By testing various innovative solutions, the company wants the net-zero store to serve as a showcase for high-performance design and green technology. The best features will gradually be introduced in other Walgreens stores. With this, the company is hoping to reduce its environmental impact and lead the development of an ecologically sustainable society.

ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers) is an American professional organization. It was during the ASHRAE 2016 Winter Conference in Orlando in January this year that Walgreens was presented with the award in the Commercial Buildings category.

Major investment in production

Green & Cool’s products are popular – so popular that for a while production was unable to keep up with demand. In response, Green & Cool has stepped up production capacity at the Profoid factory in France considerably, and introduced an advanced quality control programme.

“We had anticipated that demand would rise with the introduction of the F gas regulations on 1 January 2015. But the level of interest was significantly higher than we forecast, and when we could not keep up it affected our customers. As a result of the investment in production we can now live up to our promised delivery times,” says Micael Antonsson, Marketing Manager at Green & Cool.

Green & Cool uses environmentally-friendly carbon dioxide as a refrigerant, and is the natural choice of supplier for companies that accept their environmental responsibility and at the same time set high standards of operational reliability. The wide range of products appeals to companies of various sizes that are ready to invest in modern refrigeration equipment that meets strict environmental, financial and reliability criteria.

Green & Cool keeps food chilled in Scandinavia’s biggest mall

The Mall of Scandinavia will officially open in November this year. It will have 230 stores with a total area of 100,000 square metres spread over three floors, as well as several restaurants and an 11-screen cinema. The mall, which is close to the Swedish national football arena, Friends Arena in Stockholm, will be the largest shopping centre in Scandinavia.

Sustainability has been a high priority throughout the project, from design and planning to production and tenants’ leases. To meet the strict environmental requirements most of the food retailers have chosen refrigeration systems from Green & Cool.

“We didn’t have any active marketing input in this case. Many of the installers already knew of us, but in most cases it seems to have been the tenants themselves who came to the conclusion that our solutions are the best,” says Kent Hofmann, Sales Engineer at Green & Cool.

The Mall of Scandinavia is one of a handful of shopping centres in Europe to have been given an Excellent rating under the BREEAM system. The environmental assessment scheme is the most widely used in Europe and provides a comprehensive rating of the environmental performance of buildings.

One of Swedens largest catering kitchens to use CO2 refrigeration

A catering kitchen in the far north is now one of the largest in Sweden to use CO2 refrigeration. The new Quality Hotel & Resort Lapland has 174 rooms and is located in the centre of GĂ€llivare, with easy access to the spectacular wilderness of northern Sweden. The hotel caters to conference delegates and holidaymakers, and has a restaurant that can seat up to 500 guests.

Green & Cool’s partner, Friginor, was responsible for specifying, designing and installing the system. The company chose a dual-temperature range refrigeration unit from Green & Cool with a refrigeration output of 20 kW and a freezer output of 11 kW.

“The unit provides refrigeration for a total of 21 refrigerated counters and cabinets, plus nine refrigeration and freezing rooms. As far as we know this is now one of the largest catering kitchen in Sweden to use environmentally friendly CO2 as the refrigerant,” says Tomas TavĂ©r, CEO of Friginor.

To save space, Friginor prefabricated a machine room, then installed the gas cooler vertically on the wall of this room to protect it from snowdrifts.

“We had already installed CO2 refrigeration units from Green & Cool in three supermarkets in the area and it would not surprise me if GĂ€llivare now holds the world record for the highest density of CO2 refrigeration per capita,” says Tomas TavĂ©r.

Green & Cool refrigerates new transshipment terminal

ICA Gruppen is one of the leading retail companies in the Nordic region. In autumn 2014 ICA Fastigheter moved into a newly built transshipment terminal in Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth largest city. After evaluation by an outside consultant, Green & Cool was chosen to supply the refrigeration system. The system was installed by Sodexo.

“The cooling of warehouse and distribution buildings is one of many market areas that Green & Cool is targeting. The challenge here is in cooling large volumes, rather than dealing with extreme temperatures, and that is an area where our technology works extremely well,” says Kent Hofmann, sales engineer at Green & Cool.

The heart of the system is a Green & Cool Mistral unit with five compressors. The contract also included the supply of 20 fan evaporators. Torbjörn Thoresson, a consultant at Refcalc AB, was responsible for coming up with the best solution for the customer.

Kent Hoffman reports that Sodexo handled the installation very professionally and points to the good cooperation between all the parties involved as one of the keys to the success of the project.

“We are really pleased with Green & Cool; they produce high-quality refrigeration units and the associated service package always works well,” comments Nazif Busuladzic, a design engineer at Sodexo.

Upgraded ICA Supermarket in Arvidsjaur

ICA Supermarket in Arvidsjaur is a medium sized grocery store in the northern part of Sweden.
An important part of a major redevelopment of the store was a thorough upgrade of the store’s refrigeration systems. Our reseller Friginor undertook this work and chose a Green & Cool Crystal unit, which is well adapted for this kind of store. Storeowner Michael Kostet is very pleased with the results and the new installation means a substantial amount of energy savings.

The Green & Cool unit is a CRYSTAL indoor unit cooling capacity MT 50 kW / LT 12 kW including heat recovery.

We started the renovation of the store in May 2013. The work was done by Friginor, who installed brand new refrigerators and freezers with units from Green & Cool. The work was done without a single days truce in the store and for a period, the old and new system run in parallel. I am very impressed with the way in which Friginor has completed the work and performance of the units delivered. We can already say that we are making an energy savings of between 30-50% compared to the previous equipment. After 6 months of full operation, we also see that the reliability far exceeds our expectations” , says store owner Michael Kostet.

Europe’s first ice arena with transcritical CO2 refrigeration

In early 2013 the roof of the ice arena collapsed in the little community of Gimo in Östhammar municipality, about 120 kilometres north of Stockholm, Sweden. When the building was restored in 2014, a new cooling system and ice rink were installed. CO2 refrigeration from Green & Cool was chosen, making the Gimo ice arena the first in Europe to cool its ice rink using pure CO2 technology. The unit from Green & Cool was delivered and installed by Industry & Laboratoriekyl.

“Working together with Green & Cool, we have resolved the oil handling issue, which now makes it possible to use only CO2 as refrigerant also in ice rinks. The concept is very beneficial for clients. We are about to launch a major marketing campaign along with Green & Cool, including a website about ice rinks and CO2 refrigeration,” says Patrik Larsson, CEO, Industri & Laboratoriekyl.

The unit in Gimo ice arena is a Green & Cool Mistral, with an effect of 250 KW. The unit naturally also has heat recovery. Most of the waste heat from the cooling process is recovered and used for site heating and hot water. Excess heat is transferred to five drilled wells, 200 metres deep, which provide geothermal energy storage.
